Meet The Owner: Miles Wilkins

Miles Wilkins has resided in Wisconsin his entire life with the exception of four years serving in the military. Miles graduated from West Salem High School in 1962, attended the University of Wisconsin La Crosse for three years, and volunteered for the US Army in July of 1965. After attending Infantry Training, Officers Candidate School, Jump School, and Special Forces Training, he deployed to Vietnam for a total of 28 months.

In Miles first full time civilian job he had the opportunity helping homeowners whose energy bills had doubled in a single year. The solution was installing proper insulation and this was the beginning of a lifelong passion for improving lives by improving homes.

Over the next 19 years he expanded his knowledge and skills assisting homeowners with window and door replacements, kitchen remodels, sunrooms, decks, siding and trim.

In 1989 Miles accepted an offer to begin a home improvement department at the well established Board Store, a hardwood lumber outlet. The rest, so to speak is “history”. Miles became a licensed contractor in Wisconsin and Minnesota, regularly attending industry shows and educational opportunities, developing his own skills and those of a team that has grown to nearly 80. Miles is now recognized locally and nationally as a leader in the Home Improvement Industry.

Miles believes that Servant Leadership – “count others as more important than yourself” – is the foundation for The Board Store’s success and expects that the next generation will hold true to this principle.
